Places of Interest

North Coast - Kyrenia Region

Kyrenia’s formidable fortress has stood guard over its harbour over many centuries and played host to the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians and Ottomans. The picturesque horseshoe shaped harbour is lined with old Venetian storehouses that have been converted into lively fish restaurants with prices far lower than anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Since the border has opened, Kyrenia has undergone something of a boom attracting a massive increase in tourists and property hunters from around the world.

There are many beautiful areas along the 20km stretch east and west of Kyrenia considered by many to be the Riviera of Northern Cyprus, each with its own unique natural surroundings. The prime locations west of Kyrenia include the already lovely neighbourhoods of Karsiyaka and Lapta with their olive groves, sandy beaches and restaurants and the stunning, traditional mountain village of Karmi located high above Kyrenia.

Just 10 minutes east of Kyrenia is the village of Bellapais, made famous by Laurence Durrell in his book Bitter Lemons. This village is also home to the famous Bellapais Abbey, an array of quality restaurants and the location for classical music festivals in summer.

15 to 20 minutes east of Kyrenia is the new Championship quality 18-hole golf course which has been described as one of the top 15 courses in Europe.

East Coast – Famagusta/Bogaz Region
The east coast is home to Famagusta, the second largest city in Northern Cyprus and the up and coming Bogaz area which has been earmarked as the prime tourist region due to its fabulous beaches, historical sites of interest and proximity to the Karpas peninsular nature reserve.

The beaches in this area are really special with miles of golden sand and crystal clear water.
Nearby ancient ruins include the outstanding city of Salamis with its well preserved gymnasium, mosaics and an amphitheatre that is used for concerts with stars such as Jose Carreras playing here recently.

The Karpas peninsular nature reserve is in this region and is a truly beautiful location with near deserted sandy beaches. Wild donkeys and native Mouflon mountain goats roam freely around and the beaches are an important nesting area for Green and Loggerhead turtles.
Investors should consider the Bogaz area very strongly as there are plans for high rise, high culture developments in this area and in coming years this area will become the Miami of North Cyprus!
